GNLA’s involvement not yet established: Govt

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Wednesday convened a high-level meeting with senior government officials to review the overall security scenario in Garo Hills in the wake of the abduction of three Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) engineers on Tuesday.

Chief Secretary WMS Pariat, while speaking to news person after the meeting, said that they were yet to receive any detailed information on the abduction of the MeECL officials.

When asked if it is confirmed that the GNLA was involved in the abduction, he said that so far there is no confirmation about the same.

“The police are on the job to locate the officials,” Pariat, who is also the MeECL Chairman, said.

Meanwhile, DGP N Ramachandran said that so far they have not received any information about any ransom demand being made.

When asked if it has been established that the GNLA was involved in the abduction, Ramachandran said that those people who had abducted he officials have claimed themselves to be GNLA cadres.

“But I do not want to confirm anything at the moment until and unless I receive a detailed information on the whole case,” the DGP said.

Apart from the Chief Secretary and the DGP, other officials who attended the high-level meeting included Principal Secretary (Home) KS Kropha and Additional DGP SK Jain.

Appeals pour in for release of engineers

The safe and immediate release of the two engineers of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) have been called for by the officers and staff of the power department and the Hynniewtrep Tura Welfare Associationof Garo Hills following the shocking abduction of the two officers who also happen to be active members of the NGO.

The Hynniewtrep Tura Welfare Association (HTWA) of West Garo Hills held an emergency meeting in Tura on Wednesday after news of the kidnapping surfaced. The members to strongly condemned the unkind act of kidnapping two of their active members from Rongkhon MeECL campus on Tuesday night.

The emergency meeting passed a resolution demanding the immediate safe release of both the officers whom they termed as very responsible and dedicated officers of the power department. “We strongly demand the abductors to release them unharmed immediately,” stated HTWA president of West Garo Hills J Lyngdoh and HTWA secretary J Warjri.

In the meantime, the officers and staff of MECL,Garo Hills also passed a resolution in its meeting expressing deep concern for the safety of the two abducted engineers. “We humbly appeal to the leaders of the organization responsible for their early and safe release on humanitarian grounds,” stated the MeECL staff and officers and regarded both officers as dedicated workers of the rural people of Garo Hills.
