National Voters’ Day celebrated in Jowai

JOWAI: The 2nd National Voters’ Day was observed in Jowai at the DC’s Conference hall on Tuesday.

The function was attended by heads of various government departments, senior citizens, MDCs, students and new voters.

EPIC cards and badges with a theme ‘Proud to be a voter, ready to vote’ were distributed to newly enrolled voters including those from Chutwakhu, Mission Compound, Mynthong and Tympang Club localities.

Speaking as the chief guest, Jaintia hills Deputy Commissioner, T.Dkhar, informed that the day is commemorated to create awareness among the voters and newly enrolled voters about their voting rights.

He informed that Jaintia Hills District has the lowest registration of new Voters between the age of 18 years to 20 years.

Therefore, to effectively deal with this problem, campaigns will be introduced in schools and colleges. He also appealed to all citizens especially the youths and political parties to give awareness to the masses about the importance of the right to vote.

Meanwhile, the Additional Deputy Commissioner, B Mawlong in his introductory speech informed that the main objective of commemorating of the National Voters’ Day is to encourage and make the youths who have attained the age of 18 years aware about their responsibility as citizens of the country and to inspire them to exercise their newly acquired franchise.

As a part of the National Voters’ Day Celebration, the District Administration had organized essay and drawing competition for college and school students and the winners were awarded with cash prize and certificates.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were the JHADC Chairman, Obil Kyndiat and senior citizen of Jowai, B. Dkhar.
