Editor,

It is interesting to see the ANVC top brass enjoying life and the facilities that top politicians and bureaucrats cannot even think of. They are just sitting at home doing nothing but get huge amount of money from the Government of India. They own all sorts of luxury cars and commercial vehicles as well as immovable assets including orchards everywhere. They have built mansions and purchased flats in cities etc. They enjoy the best drinks that few can afford. Their soldiers continue to extort money from small time businessmen in the local markets and from vegetables vendors and fish suppliers, from coal barons and coal trucks moving along NH 62 en route to Gasuapara either from Nongalbibra or Chokpot for export to Bangaladesh.

Even the farmers are not spared from extortion. All this at the cost of the citizens of Garo Hills They dictate terms to us and do not seem to be under the purview of any Rule or Act framed under the Indian Constitution. They accomplish what they wish. What Julius Caesar said once “vini vici vidi” is applicable to them. Their cadres also enjoy the same facility but at the Block or village level because they are having ranks of different categories like Area Commanders or self-styled Commanders. They are now enjoying their married life and live in luxury. Ironically their in-laws love them because they bring home the goodies. Staying in two designated camps and a Liaison Office after the cease-fire agreement with the Government they are trying tyo assert their influence in all three districts of Garo Hills. The ANVC use school drop outs as their chamchas to obtain information about the areas, people, their economy etc. Their volunteers throw their weight around. When one goes shopping to Nazing Bazar in the evening one will see the cadres collecting Goonda tax. This is killing the economy of Garo Hills. Hence I appeal to the Government of India and the State Government to withdraw the cease-fire with ANVC. The ceasefire is of no use as the ANVC runs riot and does not respect the ceasefire agreement. At this rate every citizen of Garo Hills will be robbed and become emaciated.

Yours etc.,

Elite Sangma,
