The Cantonment Road in Garikhana, surrounded by its leasehold properties on one side and the municipal properties on the other is one of the busiest areas of the city filled with many rod and cement shops.
Given the commercial nature of the area, there is no adherence or regulation as far as traffic rules are concerned. Infact, the whole area turns into a parking lot with long and dangerous steel bars poking into one’s head, posing grave risks in the neighbourhood which has a sizeable population. The road remains congested with tempos, trucks and other vehicles and there is almost no room even for the pedestrians.
More dangerously, hundreds of children in Paltan Bazar have to pass through this jam packed road in order to reach the nearest schools. There are times when things come to standstill due to the presence of commercial vehicles from both sides in a road which has a single entry and exit. Such is the dimension of the problem that it would be virtually impossible for even emergency services like the 108 Ambulance Service to cater to the people of the area on time.
It’s high time the Cantonment Board took enough steps to regulate things for the benefit of the residents who are grossly affected by the unruly state-of-affairs in the neighbourhood. (Story contributed by an alert reader)
