AGARTALA: A business delegation from Bangladesh held a meeting with its Tripura counterpart to discuss issues which came up during the visit here of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina early this month related to development of bilateral trade.
A 12-member delegation, led by Shameen Ahsan Senior Vice-President of Habiganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bangladesh, arrived here on Sunday morning and held meeting with the Tripura Chamber of Commerce (TCC) and discussed issues of enhancement of border trade.
TCC president M L Debnath told the media here on Monday that despite potential, due to infrastructure deficiency trade along Khowai border in West Tripura was affected.
This got priority in the talks and it was proposed to shift the checkpost at least half a kilometre to Paharmura (India) and Kederakot (Bangladesh) to improve trade.
“Since there is no bridge over Khowai river in West Tripura border it causes inconvenience in export and import by head load and hence shifting of Balla Port (Khowai) is necessary along with development of infrastructure on both side,” Mr Debnath said.
He, however, pointed out that both organisations would volunteer to identify the products for foreign trade in respective countries while agreeing to pursue the demand further for visa liberalisation at least for business community of both nations that could facilitate frequent visit to study and improve trade.
