Compensation to deceased officials

IMPHAL: The Manipur Election authority has decided to give Rs 10 lakhs each to all the four officials, who were killed in attack by suspected NSCN(IM) militants at Chandel district on January 28 state assembly election. During the attack at the polling station at Chandel, Presiding Officer, Khumukcham Ibotombi (50) of Kakching Khunou Ngaikhong Leikai, polling personnel Kshetrimayum Premjit (50), Adim Rongmei (50), S Rakesh had died. A CRPF jawan and a woman also died in that attack. (UNI)

 

Thoubal bandh affects life

IMPHAL: A 12-hour bandh called by the Communist Party of India in Manipur’s Thoubal district affected normal life here on Monday. The bandh that began at 5 am, would continue till 5 pm. The bandh was called to protest the killing of a woman by security personnel on January 28. Due to the agitation, streets and market places wore a deserted look. Vehicles stayed off road and the National highway passing through the district was also blocked. (UNI)

 

Man arrested

KARIMGANJ (ASSAM): A man was arrested and a pistol recovered from him in south Assam’s Karimganj district on Monday. On a tip-off about the man loitering around in a suspicious manner in the Kalibari area of the town, police apprehended him. On interrogation the detained 30-year-old person, identified as Jainul Uddin, confessed he was planning to mobilise a gang of dacoits in the area. Police raided Jainul’s house in Taktarbond area and recovered a country-made pistol. (PTI)

 

Project launched for NER

KOHIMA: The pilot project of “Youth to the Edge”, aimed to promote adventure activities in the remote areas of North East Region (NER), was launched today by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Paban Singh Ghatowar in New Delhi. According to official sources, volunteers from the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) will participate in the adventure activities under the project. They said the states in the NER offer tremendous potential for various adventure and outdoor activities such as Mountaineering, Trekking and camping, Rock climbing, Jeep Safaris, Cultural Tours, Village and Home stay and community tourism among others.
