Office picketing to oppose ST status to Marngar community

NONGPOH: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), a conglomerate of the four frontal NGO’s of Ri-Bhoi District which include KSU, FKJGP, CORP, HNYFin a meeting held on Monday has called for a one day office picketing on February 3rd in protest against the State Government’s failure to revoke its order in recognizing the Marngar community as the Scheduled Tribes (ST) of the Bhoi tribe even after the deadline set by the JAC.

Chairman of the JAC Donkupar Sumer speaking to the media, informed that the office picketing would affect all the State government, Central Government offices and also all the financial institutions located in Ri-Bhoi District.

Sumer said that, “If the government is still adamant without paying heed to the demandof the JAC to revoke its order on the Schedule Tribe status of the Marngar, the JAC will be forced to take up strong agitation.’’

It may be noted that the issue came to the forefront when scheduled tribe certificates were issued by Ri-Bhoi district Deputy Commissioner Office to the Marngar community in a function which was attended by former Chief Minister DD Lapang.

The former Chief Minister DD Lapang had distributed the ST certificates to the Marngar community on the occasion.

As per Lapang, the Margnar community was recognized as scheduled tribe after being duly approved by the Political, Law and Social Welfare Department.
