SHILLONG: The State Government on Wednesday convened a meeting to chalk out the various programmes to be implemented in the State to mark 2012 as the ‘Year of the Youth’.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma informed that the different departments of the State Government will undertake various programmes this year for the youths of the State.
Under the initiative, the Government will lay special emphasis at the district-level to create necessary infrastructure to develop different sports like table tennis and basketball.
“Coaches will be appointed in every district and they will be handed the responsibility of spotting young talents for coaching,” Dr Sangma added.
In the field of arts and culture, the State Government will also conduct talent hunts and even ‘appoint’ a rock band which will perform on special events.
“They will be paid by the Government,” he added.
In order reclaim the earlier reputation of Shillong as a hub for rock concerts the State Government has also decided to invest in the Fifth Ground at Polo for all non-sporting events.
The State Government has also embarked upon constructing three amphi-theatres in Shillong, Tura and Jowai, the Chief Minister informed, while adding that an amount of Rs 3 crore has been earmarked for the project.
“All information about job opportunities will be put up at every Block headquarters for the benefit of the youth,” he said.
The Government will also soon declare one day as the State Youth Day, Dr Sangma said, adding, “We will reach to the youths at the block level too.”
