Kolkata: A suspected member of a Manipuri extremist organisation, responsible for creating links with the Maoists, was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Kolkata Police on Saturday.

“We have arrested Dhiren Singh from Maidan area today (Saturday) morning. We have recovered 30 cartridge rounds from him,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (STF) Bastav Baidya told IANS.

Baidya, however, said police were yet to confirm his links with the Manipur-based People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and refused to divulge other details.

“We cannot disclose the details of the person at this moment,” he said.

However, according to a police source, Dhiren Singh alias Raghu holds the rank of a “captain” in the PLA and was staying in Kolkata for the last four years.

“He was acting as a conduit between the Maoists and the PLA,” the source said.

According to reports, the group, with the help of the Maoists, was trying to spread its base in northeast, Assam and West Bengal

Singh has been sent to police custody till Feb 16 by a city court. (IANS)
