Shillong: Another project, another delay. It seems that the State Government lacks the will to complete any project in the State within its own set deadline.
The latest project to be hit by the menace of delay is the ongoing beautification work at Khyndailad, which is now set to miss its completion deadline.
Earlier the PWD and even the Urban Affairs department had assured that the project would be completed before the Monsoon but now the Government has set a tentative deadline of October first week for commissioning of the project.
The deadline was extended following a review meeting called by the Urban Affairs department on Tuesday with all the concerned departments.
Speaking to The Shillong Times after the meeting, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “It is next to impossible to complete the project before the Monsoon as bulk of the work is yet to be done.”
Highlighting the reasons for the delay in the project, she said that there was communication gap between the different departments, which has now been resolved.
She also informed that work was mostly being done at night which also adds to the delay.
The meeting which was attended by the officials of PWD, PHE, MeECL and BSNL decided to conduct a spot inspection of the site on Wednesday to review the various hindrances which are dogging the project.
Meanwhile, residents of the city, who are already suffering due to the slow pace of work, have now more reasons to be irked.
When asked about the problems being faced by pedestrians due to the ongoing work at Khyndailad, Ampareen said that a committee has been formed for quick dispensation of the complaints from the residents.
“The concerned departments will speed up their work to ensure that the project is completed at the earliest and without any further inconvenience to the pedestrians,” she added.
It is learnt that the concerned departments would again meet after two month to review the progress of the beautification work.
