Tura: Just a day after Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh categorically ruled out having any dialogue with the Garo outfit GNLA over its demands, the rebel outfit has replied with a statement that it can do business only with the Central government and not a State Minister whom they forsee is on his way out in next year’s Assembly elections.
GNLA political secretary Bikdot Nikjang Marak issued a press statement on Tuesday saying only talks with the Central government can bear fruit to the demands of the Garo people because Shillong will never allow power to be handed over to the people of Garo Hills.
“We will not talk to HDR Lyngdoh but only to the Central government because we will not achieve any purpose talking to a Home Minister who is unlikely to return after next year’s Assembly elections,” Marak said.
He also said if the Central government does not accept the demand for a separate state for Garos then the GNLA has the option of going to the United Nations to discuss the issue at the international forum which will embarrass the Central and State governments.
“The Khasis will never allow Garo Hills to be separated from Meghalaya and only the Central government has the power to decide on the demands and aspirations of the Garo people,” the GNLA leader added.
