Samples of dead pigeons sent for testing

Shillong: Veterinary authorities in Meghalaya on Friday sent blood samples of dead pigeons, which died here in Keating Road area over the last one month, while the district authorities sounded a general alert in the area.

Animal and Husbandry Veterinary Director D. Lyngwa said, “We have sent the blood samples of the pigeons this morning for test to Assam-based Regional Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (RRDL) and the results are awaited.

“Since the exact cause of the deaths of birds in the area is not yet confirmed, we have not decided to impose any restriction on consumption. But if the test proves positive, we will impose restrictions,” he added.

Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills district administration had sounded a general alert after the unnatural deaths of pigeons in Keating road area situated in the heart of the city.

Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that a seven-km radius of the area, where the birds had died, has been kept under surveillance. (UNI)
