Guwahati: Maoists activities in Assam along the border with Arunachal Pradesh have added a new dimension to the security scenario of the northeast, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday said.

“The Maoists have been trying to lure youths by misguiding them and forging links with militant groups like the anti-talk ULFA and others,” he told a two-day national seminar ‘Sustaining Peace in Northeast India: Changing Dimensions’ here.

Asserting that his government was aware of the situation, he said, “We have already formulated an action plan to deal with the situation as it has still not gone out of hand. My government will deal firmly with any threats posed by militant groups and the Maoists.”

“Some of the militant groups have splinter factions that are outside the purview of the peace process. As far as our government is concerned, we want all these splinter groups also to come and participate in dialogue. The doors are open for all, including Paresh Baruah (ULFA ‘commander in chief’).”

Referring to the law-and-order situation in the state, he claimed that it had improved ‘remarkably’ but there was no room for complacency, “We have to remain on vigil and not let our guards down as some criminal elements are trying to fill up the vacuum created by the surrender of scores of militants,” he added.
