SHILLONG: Normal functioning of the government offices and financial institutions in Ri-Bhoi district remained paralysed on the first day of the two-day picketing called the Joint Action Committee (JAC), a conglomerate of several NGOs, on Tuesday.

The office picketing has been called in protest against the state government’s decision to grant ST status to Marngar Community residing in the district.

The Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep, however, claimed that the attendance in the government offices was around 66.6 per cent. The office picketing passed off peacefully, he said.

Meanwhile, JAC chairman Donkupar Sumer urged the government employees to continue their support by not attending their offices on Wednesday, the second day of the office picketing.
