Eastern Ri-Bhoi Coordination Committee issues one-week deadline to Govt

From Our Correspondent

NONGPOH: Just days after the Government began diverting empty trucks through the Nongpoh-Nartiang road following the inauguration of the Umkhen bridge, the move has evoked sharp criticism from the public with the newly-formed body Eastern Ri-Bhoi Coordination Committee (ERBCC) issuing a one-week deadline to the State Government to stop diverting trucks through the road.

The State Government had begun diverting empty trucks through the Nongpoh-Nartiang road from February 13 to ease the unprecedented traffic congestion in Shillong and on the highways.

The ERBCC, comprising the KSU, FKJGP, HNYF, CORP, RUPA, Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong and other organisations, which was formed on Thursday, during a public meeting held at Mawlasnai has asked the State Government to stop diverting empty trucks through the said road which is very narrow and in poor condition. The committee also stated that unless the road was widened and improved it would pose a threat to the lives of villagers, especially the children.

It also demanded that the Government should first widen and improve the road before allowing trucks to ply through it.
