KSU to demand ILP introduction

SHILLONG: The new leadership of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has vowed to carry forward its fight against influx of outsiders to Meghalaya and pressed for introduction of inner line permit (ILP) and three-tier identity card system while standing firm on its decision to oppose the Railway project.

“To control influx, we feel it is important for the government to introduce ILP and three-tier identity card system,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem told reporters after the maiden meeting of the student body’s new Central Executive Committee (CEC) here on Friday.

Criticising the State government’s ‘lackadaisical attitude’ towards implementing work permit system, he said, “There have been complaints of violation of the Inter-State Workmen Regulation Act, 1979 (as amended in 1985) while issuing work permit.”

“The work permit system controls illegal migration but we have noticed that this system has not been implemented in its true spirit and there are several loopholes which need to be plugged,” he added.

A KSU team will meet top officials of the Labour department in this regard shortly.

He said several districts of the State do not even have a Labour Inspector. “These are a few things that need to be addressed by the government”, Khyriem said adding that the state government should speed up the appointment of the Labour inspectors in all the 39 blocks of the State. The KSU central body, meanwhile, urged the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) to withdraw the Meghalaya Hindi Writing (part 4) book of Class VII which according to the students’ body displays indecent pictures and signs.
