NONGPOH: The newly-formed Eastern Ri Bhoi Coordination Committee (ERBCC) on Monday disrupted plying of empty trucks through Nongpoh- Nartiang road.

The ERBCC had on February 16 issued a one-week deadline to the State Government to stop diverting trucks through the road saying the Government should first widen and improve the road before allowing trucks to ply through it.

The State Government had begun diverting empty trucks through the Nongpoh-Nartiang road from February 13 to ease traffic congestion in Shillong and on the highways.

The ERBCC, comprising the KSU, FKJGP, HNYF, CORP, RUPA, Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong and other organisations, which was formed recently in a public meeting held at Mawlasnai, had stated that unless the road was widened and improved it would pose a threat to the lives of villagers, especially the children.

The ERBCC members did not allow the trucks to enter Nongpoh- Nartiang road and subsequently forced them to take the National Highway 40 on Monday.

The ERBCC spokesperson Sunlight Shadap later told newsmen that the PWD must widen the road. “If the Government fails to take any initiative in this regard the committee will be forced to agitate again,” he said.
