SHILLONG: In an unfortunate incident, a woman died after being electrocuted while attempting to save the life of her friend who is battling for her life at a city hospital.
The deceased, Anita Sangma, 28, mother of two children, died while trying to save the life of her friend, Sheetal Joshi.
The incident occurred at the Police Reserve residential quarters in the city on Sunday. According to information from sources, Sheetal, had thrown two currency notes from her building to one of her friends below, asking her to buy kwai (betel leaf) from a nearby shop, but one of the notes got stuck on a 1100-KV high tension wire which passes just next to the building.
She then attempted to retrieve the note using a metallic road but was electrocuted.
Seeing her friend in trouble, Anita tried to rescue her but in the process, she too was electrocuted and later succumbed to her injuries. “I witnessed the incident from my room and it was horrific,” an eye witnesses said later.
Sheetal was taken to a city hospital and her condition is stated to be critical.
Anita Sangma’s mother Jayanti Pal is now shock and shattered at her daughter’s sudden death of her daughter.
Residents complain that the high tension wires are too close to the residential quarters and if the errors are not rectified it may lead to another catastrophe some other day in the future.
