SHILLONG: The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has asserted that the department is taking full precaution to ensure that there is no traffic congestion in the city and the national highways during the upcoming SSLC and HSSLC examinations.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh said, “We will intensify night patrolling to ensure that there is no traffic jam in the mornings when students head for their respective examination centres.”
The statement from the STP came after the Khasi Students’ Union met the Deputy Inspector General (Eastern Range), A Sun, and urged upon him to direct the traffic department to take measures to avoid traffic congestion during the SSLC and HSSLC examinations.
Lyngdoh informed that cranes would be stationed at different traffic branches along the highways to tow away any vehicle which might break down on the highways.
“We will try our best to ensure that there is no traffic jam during examination days,” Lyngdoh said, even as he appealed drivers to desist from overtaking especially during traffic jams.
Reacting to a query about the plying of trucks during the examination period, Lyngdoh said that entry of trucks in the city would depend on the situation. He also added that they cannot hold the trucks on the highways for a long time as it might result in highway jams.
It may be reminded that last year, many candidates faced a torrid time due to the traffic jams in the city and there were many instances when candidates reached their examination centres late after being caught in traffic congestions.
