Guwahati: Still trying hard to recuperate from three consecutive defeats in Assembly polls since 2001 at the hands of Congress, the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has started a process of revamping the party organization from the grass root to the top level.
The party which ruled Assam for two terms during 1985-1990 and 1996-2001 before it was repeated rejected by the people of Assam basically because of its ‘misrule’ during the second term.
Once student leaders who formed the party in 1985 after culmination of Assam Agitation, are now nearing 50s-60s in their life and running out of steam to revive the party by rejuvenating the sagging morale of the party cadres all over the state. So the party has started rebuilding its units from grass root level to infuse new blood.
“We are in the process of rebuilding the party organisations from the top to bottom. Party units at block, district, and regional levels are now being reconstituted through a democratic process. We are open to welcome fresh blood in our new committees. The process will continue till ‘Bohag Bihu’ (Spring Festival in Assam) after which the new central executive will be formed,” the party’s one of the vice-presidents Apurba Bhattacharjee said.
However, the regional party’s efforts to refurbish its organisation and strength have not been without hiccups though. Some of the old guards in the party who have been ignored during the reorganisation process have raised voices of dissent against the entire exercise much to the chagrin of party leadership.
In fact, one such senior leader Ameo Borah in Golaghat district where the party was formally launched in 1985, have left the party in a huff along with his supporters from 26 regional units of the party in the district after he had been defeated in the election to the party’s district president post.
Bora is known to be close to former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
