Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has exhorted the society to show love and kindness to orphans and try to fill in the void in their lives through compassion and understanding.

“It is society’s responsibility to look after the physical, intellectual and emotional needs of the orphaned children, thereby helping them to aim for the right things in life and become good citizens of the country. We must direct all our energies in transforming their lives,” Gogoi said at a function organized by Surjyamukhi, an NGO for orphans, on Tuesday.

He said orphaned and destitute children need all the kindness and care from each and every member of the society to transform their lives.

“Compassion, love and care are what the orphaned children need from society. It is the most noble work we can do. Your support can bring hope and comfort to orphans, and a future with promise. For an orphan with no one in the world, your kindness makes all the difference,” Gogoi said.

Appreciating the work of Surjyamukhi for espousing the cause of orphans in the past two years, Gogoi said, “Our Government will continue to extend support to those NGOs, who are running orphanages. We must join hands in giving them these children their rights and in making them responsible citizens. ‘We will also take up new schemes for the welfare of orphans and destitute in the coming days,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, former minister Hemoprabha Saikia said the children must be given the opportunities to flower into full personalities.

‘Human love is what these children look up to. Love can work miracles and in transforming the precious lives of these children,’ she said.

Addressing the gathering, founder of Surjyamukhi Jurie Sarma Bordoloi said, ‘It is society’s responsibility to nurture the orphans who are in need of our support and help.’

Mr Bordoloi hoped that the presence of the chief minister would help to inspire and motivate the children.

Children of several orphanage homes like Jyoti Snehalaya, Auxilium Snehalaya, Shishu Mangal Kendra, SEC, Akoni Snehalaya put up dance, drama, songs and recitation performances much to the delight of the gathering.

The chief minister presented umbrellas to the orphans and released doves on the occasion. (UNI)
