NONGSTOIN: In yet another instance of interference by Assam into Meghalaya’s affairs, an Assam police team made a failed attempt on Tuesday to disrupt the ongoing construction of a market complex in Langpih, thanks to the alert Meghalaya Police personnel who prevented the Assam police team from reaching the construction site.

Sources informed on Tuesday that Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup district in Assam, RK Chaudhary, sent a team of Assam Police personnel led by the Circle Inspector of Lumpee Assam Battalion camp to inquire about the market complex construction being undertaken by the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills at Langpih market.

However, the Meghalaya police personnel at the Police Outpost at Langpih did not allow the Assam Police team to reach the spot where the construction is going on.

The Meghalaya Police personnel, who were well equipped with automatic weapons like LMGs, SLRs and AK-47 rifles, secured the area which forced the Assam police personnel including the commando force to return back from Langpih and camp at the Lumpee Assam Police Outpost.

Later the Assam police team reported the matter to the Kamrup ADC about the action taken by the Meghalaya Police.

Meanwhile, W Nongsiej, Additional Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills district informed that the West Khasi Hills District Administration on Tuesday evening decided to send a team headed by Nongsiej including the Magistrate and accompanied by the Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills, R Muthu, to Langpih for talks with the Assam government officials on the regular interference of Assam into the construction of the Langpih market complex.

The Assam officials, who will visit Langpih on Wednesday, will include the ADC and SP of Kamrup district.

It may be reminded that ever since the West Khasi Hills district administration decided to go ahead with the construction of the market complex at Langpih, Assam has been accusing Meghalaya of violating the status quo observed by both states in the disputed border area. However, the West Khasi Hills administration has claimed that the states have the right to execute developmental activities in the disputed border area without violating the status quo.
