SHILLONG: Altogether 39,807 students will be appearing in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination 2012 which begins on Monday.

The examination will be over on March 16.

MBOSE Executive Chairman EP Kharbhih, on Sunday, informed that a total number of 21214 female candidates and 18393 male candidates are appearing for their examination. Of the total, 17375 are regular candidates while 22432 are private candidates, he informed.

Meanwhile, the State Traffic police are on high alert with the SSLC examination starting from Monday.

“We are on alert to see that there is no traffic snarl on the days of the examination. We have also strengthened our night vigil to see that there is no disruption in the traffic flow due to the breakdown of any vehicle along the highway,” Additional SP (Traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh informed The Shillong Times on Sunday.

Admitting that breakdown of vehicles is the main factor behind traffic jam, Lyngdoh said that the traffic personnel who would remain on night vigil would ensure that vehicles are taken off the road as soon as they breakdown.

He also informed that they have also posted a crane each at Lumdiengjri and Madanriting police stations to tow away any vehicle which might breakdown.

The Additional SP (Traffic) also requested the public to avoid overtaking in case there is any breakdown of vehicles since it would pose difficulties for the traffic police to clear the road and ensure smooth traffic flow.

Lyngdoh also requested the SSLC candidates to leave for their examination centres as early as possible so that they are not late for their examination should there be any instance of traffic snarl in the city.

Lyngdoh also informed that the Traffic department would not allow trucks to ply through the city between 7 am and 7 pm. The trucks would be held at Lad Smit and Upper Shillong, he said, even as he stated that trucks would not be held at Mawiong since the lay-byes there is too small to accomodate the huge number of trucks plying through NH-40. Lyngdoh also informed that the police have put up helpline numbers which people can access people can call if they come across any cases of traffic jam.

It may be noted that this year the MBOSE has scheduled the examination timings between 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.
