Husband sent to 14-day judicial custody in wife burning case

 SHILLONG: Md Nafees, who allegedly tried to burn his wife Shagufta Parveen by pouring kerosene on her body on Sunday night has been remanded to14 days judicial custody.

The brother of Shagufta Parveen, Md Shahbaz who has been alleged of ransacking the house of Md Nafees has also been remanded to 14-day judicial custody after they were produced before the court here on Tuesday.

The duo have been detained in a dowry- related family matter after 20 year old Shagufta and her family alleged that her in-laws and her husband started torturing her demanding dowry soon after the marriage.

“We are still investigating into the matter”, adding Md Nafees has been arrested under the section of the dowry act, a senior police official said here on Tuesday.

Shagufta, who at present is undergoing treatment in Shillong Civil Hospital, was rescued by her neighbours and her brother.Shagufta alleged that she had been tortured mercilessly by her husband.
