Lucknow: Rattled by incidents of violence in many parts of Uttar Pradesh and worried at them being attributed to workers of his victorious Samajwadi Party (SP), SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav Friday summoned state police chief Atul Kumar and Chief Secretary Anoop Mishra to his party office.
In a 20-minute-long meeting between Yadav and the two top officials of the state, Mulayam Singh asked them to crack down on lawless elements and ensure that the rule of law was enforced everywhere. Emerging out of the meeting, the DGP said that “Mulayam Singhji had called me and has asked me to ensure that no hooliganism took place at any place”.
Later ADG (Law & Order) Subesh Singh held a press briefing at the annexe and told media persons that orders had been issued to all districts to ensure there was no breach of law and order anywhere.
Earlier in the day, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav had accused “mischief makers” and state government officials of trying to tarnish the party’s image.
Akhilesh had told reporters that the violence was part “of a political conspiracy”. It had been hatched by people who “were not able to digest the triumph of the party”, Akhilesh said. Refuting reports that SP workers were indulging in violence, Akhilesh Yadav blamed the present set of officials for being behind the incidents and rumour mongering.
He alleged that officials of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)-led government, which was defeated earlier this week, were spreading canards about the SP “as they knew they are on their way out”. Addressing reporters, he gave a clean chit to party workers in the incidents of violence attributed to them. The SP president also said the incidents of violence were “politically conspired”. “You should understand that all this is a deep rooted political conspiracy, done by opponents and officials who have tortured our party cadres in the past five years of Mayawati’s rule,” he added.
