SHILLONG: The state government has come under tremendous pressure with two factions of people in West Khasi Hills demanding upgradation of Civil Sub-Divisions into a district, one being Mairang Civil Sub-Division and Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Division.
One faction comprising of West Khasi Hills based NGOs who are in support of upgradation of Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Division to a district has announced that they will wait for the chief minister’s reply on the matter in the next two days after their meeting with Dr Mukul Sangma here on Monday. While terming the discussion with the CM as fruitful, chairman of the Mawkyrwat District Demand Committee D Lyngdoh said “The CM has assured that the matter will be taken up in the assembly and will deliver the reply soon after consulting the matter with the cabinet ministers”.
Meanwhile, another faction comprising of the Mairang Assembly Youth Congress Committee (MAYCC) and Mawthadraishan Assembly Youth Congress Committee have submitted a memorandum to the CM recently stating that Mairang being the oldest Civil Sub Division deserves to be upgraded to a district.Firm on their demand, the MAYCC said “We strongly believe that Mairang Civil Sub-Division will be upgraded to a district level.”Earlier, in a meeting at KSU office here at Jaiaw on Monday, the KSU South West Khasi Hills District informed that they will extend their support to the South West Khasi Hills District Demand Forum which was created just few days ago which comprises of all the West Khasi Hills based NGOs, political leaders, members of the Dorbar Shnong besides others.
The union also informed that they want the government to include the Mawkyrwat block, Mawsynram block and Ranikor block if the new district is created in West Khasi Hills while mentioning that ach block has about 432 villages as per the 2005-06 census.
Meanwhile, the Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF) has made it clear that if the government fails to process its decision in the creation of a new district at Jaintia Hills, then they will be forced to boycott the upcoming electoral poll in 2013.
In a meeting held with the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma here in the city on Monday, the federation announced that they want the implementation in the creation of a new district in Jaintia Hills to start before the 2013 elections.
“If the government fails to meet our demand, then we will be forced to boycott the upcoming 2013 election.” JYF president P Majaw told reporters after the meeting here on Monday.
“We want the government to speed up the process of laying the foundation stone of the new district in Jaintia Hills because we fear that the decision could be altered at any time”, P Majaw said.
