SHILLONG: The crusader for clean politics Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit (UDP) has raised a pointed question on alleged unholy nexus between the Chief Minister and PHE Minister who are being ‘paid’ by a technocrat of the PHE department.

While referring to an article by Patricia Mukhim, Editor, The Shillong Times, which appeared in August last year, he said that in the article it was alleged that Chief Minister and the PHE Minister were getting kick-back from the electrical engineer.

“I would like Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma to clarify if these allegations which are mentioned in the article are true or not. If these are really true then it is a big shame for the people of the State,” Basaiawmoit said while participating in the discussion on the Governor’s address here on Monday.

Not stopping at this, the UDP further alleged that the Electrical Engineer of the PHE department who hails from Mawngap area seems to be a very influential person since it has been alleged that he is responsible for sponsoring the election campaigns of at least five politicians from the area. While pointing out that the corruption is killing the whole system, he said, “The sad part is that the Government is still in a denial mode when it comes to corruption in the system. “I strongly feel that it is high time for the Government to a serious look on issue relating to corruption. We cannot afford to allow this menace to ruin the progress and development of the State,” Basaiawmoit said. He also suggested that the State Government should hand over all the major corruption cases to a central investigating agency. “By doing this, we can send a strong message to those officials who are involved in corrupt practices,” Basaiawmoit said.
