SHILLONG: Members of the Opposition on Wednesday expressed their displeasure over the inadequate security arrangement provided to the Opposition legislators, even as they criticized the government for providing security to influential individuals and private firms.

The Opposition members were reacting to a statement by Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh who, in response to a query, informed the House that the government was providing security in the camp of one SK Agarwala, a contractor engaged in construction work on National Highway 51 and another company which is undertaking construction work on the Nongstoin-Tura highway.

The Opposition also alleged that personnel engaged in security work of private firms were provided with sophisticated weapons, whereas the security personnel who are attached with the Opposition legislators are not provided such weapons.

Opposition Leader Conrad K Sangma also claimed that the government was keen to provide security to coal merchants and weighbridge owners while neglecting its elected representatives.

In his response, the Home Minister assured that the government would look into the grievances of the Opposition legislators.
