IRRI to assist in rice production in State

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday informed the House that the total production of rice in the State was 206964 metric tonnes as per the 2010-11 provisional figures furnished by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics.

Reacting to a query from Opposition Leader Conrad K Sangma, the Chief Minister informed that the average consumption of the rice in the State per annum is 426817 metric tonnes according to data furnished by the Department of Food and Civil Supplies.

He also mentioned that the State Government has signed an agreement with the Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to boost rice productivity in Meghalaya.

Dr Sangma also informed that a preliminary report prepared by IRRI experts has been already been sent to the government.
