SHILLONG: The government will appoint two full-fledged principals in Jowai and Tura polytechnics.

Informing this in the State Assembly on the concluding day of the budget session on Friday, Education Minister Prof RC Laloo said, “We are contemplating to appoint senior most teachers as the principals.”

Earlier, the members from both the Opposition and Treasury benches expressed concern over the problems being faced by the students of both theses polytechnics due to the absence of full-fledged principals.

The members also questioned the government on recent hunger strike by the students of Jowai Polytechnic.

Raising the issue during Question Hour, UDP legislator Ardent M Basaiawmoit sought to know from the Government on the steps taken by the government to convince the students of Jowai Polytechnics to withdraw their agitation.

NCP legislator James K Sangma raised the issue of appointment of full-fledged principals in both the polytechnics.

He also sought to know when the Government would take over the management of the Jowai Polytechnic as the Asian Development Fund (ADB) had already stopping funding this institute in 2007.

In his reply, Prof Laloo said, “I will submit a proposal to the Cabinet for taking over the management of Jowai Polytechnics”.

The Minister said he had requested the students to call off their hunger strike since the Government would soon resolve their various demands.

“I have also directed Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner to personally talk with the students and convey the message of the Government,” Prof Laloo said.

Replying to a supplementary of James Sangma, Education Minister said the PWD has prepared a Rs 1.92-crore plan for renovation of the Jowai Polytechnic.

Prof Laloo also informed the House that the Government has approved the plan and estimates amounting to Rs 8 crore for the Williamnagar Polytechnic.
