Shillong: In a bid to tackle flood created by the rivers Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi, especially during the monsoon, the State Water Resources department has prepared a Rs 50-crore Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a flood management programme.

Talking to media persons here on Monday, Water Resources Minister AL Hek said the government has prepared a DPR for a programme called ‘Flood Management Programme for Protection of River Wahumkhrah and River Umshyrpi’.

Under the programme, the State Government plans to construct proper drains on the small streams which lead to Wahumkhrah, adding that the UnionMminister of State for Water Resources Vincent Pala has assured funds to address the issue under the flood management programme.

Hek said that the programme would take care of the agricultural lands which are situated along the two rivers. Besides it would also address the issue of soil erosion of the two rivers, he said.

The Water Resources Minister also asserted that the DPR of the programme has already been forwarded to the Brahmaputra Board after which the DPR will be forwarded to the Central Water Commission for necessary action.

It may be recalled that floods in the river Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi create havoc during rainy season every year destroying agricultural land and displacing many people.
