Shillong: After serving Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for 18 long years, former general secretary of the students’ body Hamlet Dohling on Tuesday began a new innings by joining United Democratic Party (UDP).
Dohling is now all set to contest the Assembly election due in 2013 from Mylliem as an UDP candidate.
The former KSU leader formally joined the party at a function held at Umlyngka in Upper Shillong in the presence of UDP working president, Paul Lyngdoh, Social Welfare Minister JA Lyngdoh, president of UDP East Khasi Hills unit RA Lyngdoh besides others.
Addressing the gathering, Dohling said influx, unemployment, land encroachment by Assam, discrimination of local farmers top his agenda.
“If Congress retains power after the next election, the next Chief Minister will be a Garo,” he said indirectly hinting at Dr Mukul Sangma.
“We want people to take a decision on this if they want a Khasi to become the next chief minister,” Dohling said.
