Bru refugees to be resettled in Kolasib district
Aizawl: With the Mizoram government deciding to resume the stalled process of repatriation of Bru refugees from Tripura next month, the Kolasib district administration in the state is gearing up to receive over 600 Bru families, officials said on Tuesday. While majority of the Bru refugees, lodged in six relief camps in North Tripura district, were being resettled in Mamiot district on the Mizoram-Tripura border, 628 Bru families would be resettled in Kolasib district on the Mizoram-Assam-Tripura border, officials said. The first batch of Bru refugees would continue to be resettled in Mamit district and those returning to Kolasib district would be repatriated during May and June. Kolasib district Deputy Commissioner Niharika Rai has instructed all the departments concerned to submit details of preparations for the resettlement process to her by March 28. (PTI)
Two injured by rhinos in Assam
Guwahati: Two villagers were injured by two one-horned rhinos after straying out of the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary in lower Assam on Tuesday, forest department sources said. The two, residents of Gobardhan village, were attacked by the rhinos which strayed out of the sanctuary through the Beki river bank. The rhinos, a highly endangered species, were later driven inside the sanctuary, which is a world heritage site. The injured villagers were being treated at the Barpeta road civil hospital. (PTI)
Two minor girls rescued
Tezpur: Two minor girls who were engaged as labourers in a brick kiln factory were rescued by the Sonitpur district administration in Assam on Tuesday. The girls were rescued from Borghati near here after they were employed as labourers by a team of the district administration led by Sompriti Goswami, assistant commissioner and Saniram Bora, circle officer. The team has started a district wide operation to prevent child trafficking in the over 150 brick kiln factories operating in the district. District administration sources pointed out that the factories, operating without proper government licence, were engaging child labourers for many years. The UNICEF and the Assam Mahila Samata Society, a women group, have lauded the efforts of the district administration in rescuing the girls. (PTI)
