SHILLONG:With unemployment problem ticking like a time bomb, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has called upon the banking sector to play a major role in ensuring job security to the ever increasing youths of the state.
Unemployment is increasing every second in the state and the government, being the sole job provider is finding it difficult to tackle this problem”, Lyngdoh stated.
Easing the burden of the government, the urban affairs minister has asked the banking sector to step in and ensure job opportunities to the youth.
Lyngdoh was addressing a gathering at the opening of the 45th branch of the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd (MCAB) at Nongshiliang, Nongthymmai here on Wednesday.
While terming banking as the correct approach to ensure job security, Lyngdoh said there is a need to instill a sense of hope among the unemployed lots in the urban as well as rural areas.
Meanwhile, referring to this year as the ‘Year of the Youth’, the Urban Affairs Minister who is also the local MLA of this constituency said the expectation of the youth this year is very high while urging upon the banking sector to look into this with utmost importance.
Lyngdoh also pointed out that even though Shillong as a city is considered urbanized, “Yet there are many aspects of living that is still lacking behind and one is banking”, she mentioned.
“However, the concept of banking in a society like ours (Khasi Society) is finally taking roots and has to some extent taken control over the economic loss”, Lyngdoh said.
