CM inaugurates Dawki farmers’ market

JOWAI: While on his way back to Shillong from Dhaka via Dawki, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma inaugurated a farmer’s market at Dawki on Wednesday.

Parliamentary Secretary Abdul Saleh, local legislator Lahkmen Rymbui, JHADC Chief Lamdibok Sumer and others were present at the inaugural function.

The market was constructed by the Meghalaya State Agriculture Market Board in 2010 with an aim to improve the economy of the farmers in the area.

The Agricultural department had allocated fund under the Additional Central Assistance 2008-09 for development of the farmers’ market. A total of Rs 2.5 crore at Rs 50 lakh for each market was sanctioned for this purpose.

The project was implemented at Dawki considering its location along the international border between India and Bangladesh.

Rymbui, while speaking on the occasion requested the Chief Minister to sanction additional funds for extension and expansion of the market building.

The Chief Minister on his part announced a sum of Rs 15 lakh for the Market Committee for providing sanitation facilities in and around the market place.
