SHILLONG: With a view to instill discipline among the tourist vehicle (sumo or Indica) drivers, the United Khasi Hills Sumo/Indica Tourist Drivers’ Association has come out with a noble idea to make travelling more safe and secure.

The Association presented blue-coloured T-Shirts and caps, identity cards and mobile Bluetooth hands-free earpieces (courtesy Aircel) to around eighty drivers at a small but impressive function at the Anjalee parking stand on Friday.

The idea behind the initiative is to ensure that member drivers can be easily identified by passengers and that discipline is maintained at all times.

During the function, the drivers were advised to use the uniforms well and to maintain decorum and road discipline at all times for the greater good of the passengers.

Speaking to mediapersons, Association secretary L Kharpuri said, “We wish to inculcate amongst our member drivers a higher level of discipline and courtesy so that passengers especially tourists feel safe while visiting our State.”

Association president, B Lyngdoh emphasized that the main purpose of the exercise is to encourage professionalism amongst member drivers so that tourists will not only feel safe but also go back to their homes with fond memories of their journeys in Meghalaya.
