NONGPOH: ‘There is no permanent friend or foe in politics’, goes a popular saying. Former KSU North Khasi Hills president Donkupar Sumer realised this bitter truth after his close friend and ex-FKJGP North Khasi Hills president Eddie G Kharbani publicly announced his intention to contest next year’s assembly election from 11-Umsning constituency as an Independent candidate.
When contacted by this correspondent, Kharbani confirmed his decision saying, “I have decided to enter the fray as many people from Umsning constituency have urged me to contest the forthcoming Assembly election as they believe that I would be to do more for them. “After much thought I have taken this decision to contest the next election as an Independent candidate,” he added.
It may be mentioned here Sumer had announced his resignation as president of KSU North Khasi Hills unit and also from the post of chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of social organizations of Ri Bhoi district at a public meeting at Umsning on Saturday last.
Interestingly, during the public meeting, Kharbani had openly made an offer of help and support to Sumer for his candidature in the forthcoming assembly election from Umsning.
Sources close to the FKJGP president have revealed that Kharbani was disappointed with the maiden political speech of Sumer where he had lashed out at former Umroi MDC FM Mawphniang for his double-standard role on uranium mining as an NGO leader and as a politician.
It may be noted that Sumer is one of four people who have applied for UDP ticket to contest from Umsning constituency.
The others include Mawphniang, former school headmistress Jennifer Joan Kylla and advocate Lurshai Wahlang who is also the president of the UDP Umsning circle.
