Probe into Langpih firing incident

By Our Reporter

Shillong: The one-man Judicial Inquiry Commission of Justice (retd) PC Phukan probing the Langpih firing incident, submitted its findings to the Assam government on Saturday.

The report was handed over to Assam Home department official, J Barua at Dispur by the Secretary of the Commission, SN Bhuyan, who is also the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup district, Assam.

The submission of the report to the Assam government was also duly communicated to the Meghalaya government, which can seek a copy of the report from its Assam counterpart.

The Commission in its report examined the terms of reference which include ascertaining the circumstances leading to the police firing, to find out if any persons or organisations were responsible for the incident and to determine whether there were any lapses on the part of the authorities from either side, and if so, to fix responsibility thereof.

It may be noted that four Khasi villagers were killed while 12 others were injured on May 14, 2010 when Assam police personnel posted at Langpih fired at them.
