Residents of Nongmynsong and nearby localities
have been of late facing acute shortage of drinking water.
The scarcity of potable water in the area has reached such an extent that sometimes it leads to quarrels between families who gather around a water tap for their daily quota from the PHE department.
A resident of the area while talking on this issue said that on most of the occasions they have to wait for long time to collect a few buckets of water.
“Since the water is not enough for our families we are forced to buy water at a very high rate,” the residents added.
According to the residents, sometimes they have to survive the entire day with just two or three buckets of water.
This problem is not only confined to Nongmynsong alone but spread over other localities of the city also. It is expected that the scarcity of drinking water in Shillong is expected to be over only when the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) is commissioned. But when the project will be ready for operation is a different matter altogether.
Local legislator AL Hek had recently said that most of the water supply schemes being implemented in and around the area are in their last state of construction and very soon the scarcity of water would be a thing of the past.
“Major works have been done and distribution of lines will be over soon,” Hek had said. (ST)
