Storm kills seven in Tripura

Agartala: At least seven persons were killed and over 40 injured in a storm and lightning which hit different parts of the state, official sources said today.

Lightning killed two persons at Mohanpur and another in Bishalgarh in West Tripura district while a girl and a boy were killed at Amarpur in Gomati district and another one at Belonia in South Tripura district in last three days, they said.

During storm a live electric wire came in touch of one six-year old boy at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district leading to his death, police said.

At least 1000 houses including the makeshift camps of paramilitary forces were devastated, many electric posts were uprooted and cattle killed in different parts of the state in last three days, police said.

At least 40 people including five jawans of security forces were injured when their houses collapsed during the storm.

Police said, security forces and Quick Reaction Teams (QRT) of disaster Management groups were busy in rescuing the victims of the storm.

Sources in Met office said, the cyclonic storm is likely to continue for the next forty eight hours in the state.

Meanwhile, a woman and her daughter were crushed to death after a large tree fell on them during a turbulent pre-monsoon storm locally known as ‘To’ last evening in Mizoram-Tripura border Mamit district.

Reports said that Vanlalchhuanga and his wife Lalhmangaihi (48) and their daughter Lalmuanpuii (20) were visiting their farm, about two kilometres from Rengdil village when the storm hit the area.

A large tree was uprooted by the strong wind which fell on the family members killing Lalhmangaihi and Lalmuanpuii, who recently completed her class 12 examinations, on the spot. (PTI)
