According to sources from the traffic department, approximately twenty to thirty vehicles are hitting the roads of Shillong on an average day which will further make the narrow roads of Shillong more congested.
Shillong city is eminent for traffic jams as snarls and long queue of stranded vehicles is a regular sight in Shillong which is booming with vehicles.
Sources also revealed that till September last year, altogether there were 88, 369 registered vehicles in the East Khasi Hills district alone and the number would have had surely gone up in the last six months.
Trucks are considered to be the most common reason for traffic jams in Shillong and it is learnt that thirteen thousand five hundred thirty trucks ply on the road of Shillong on an average day.The proposed fly over in the city was expected to provide some sort of relief to the residents from the traffic but the proposal even after so many years has not made any progress.
According to sources, the total number of cars and two wheelers that enters the Shillong city from other districts on a single day stands at 20, 270.Taking cognizance of the urgency to address the traffic conundrum, the Government has decided to recruit traffic personnel for constituting a separate traffic wing in the police department.Altogether around 1, 7870 vehicles ply on the narrow roads on a single day, sources added.
Speaking on this issue, additional superintendent of police (traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh said that the Shillong Traffic police is trying its best to keep city free from any traffic congestion.
“We have even intensified our patrolling at night as hundreds of trucks ply at night time,” he added.
Since the Shillong Bypass is yet to be completed and the four laning is in a controversy, the only hope to get a respite from the traffic jam is now the separate traffic wing.
