Delay in implementation of Iawmusiang market complex in Jowai

From Our Correspondent

JOWAI: Failing to get a convincing response from the Public Works Department (PWD) on the delay in construction of the Iawmusiang Market Complex in Jowai, the FKJGP, Jaintia Hills District Unit has threatened to resort to agitation in Jaintia Hills if the government and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) fail to implement the project immediately.

FKJGP District Unit president, Tuesday Lytep, informed on Tuesday that the PWD Chief Engineer had informed that the Department has to study and review the plan estimate as the old rate schedule has to be modified due to inflation.

“We will wait for a few days and if the government and the JHADC fail to take initiative for immediate implementation of the project we would resort to agitation to ensure that the project finally takes off,” Lytep said.

“It is the biggest and most important market place in Jaintia Hills district and we are deeply concerned over the delay in implementation of the project,” Lytep added.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, JHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Lamdibok Sumer informed that he and a team of his MDCs will soon meet the government to discuss the delay in implementation of the project.

“The PWD is supposed to start the construction work but we could not understand why the department is delaying the project,” Sumer said, while adding that the District Council is ready to bear any extra expenditure involved in the construction work.

It may be reminded that in 2001 the Union DoNER Ministry had sanctioned Rs 20.09 crore for the re-development and construction of Iawmusiang Market in the form of a multi-storey supermarket complex in Jowai.

Though the DoNER Ministry has already released the first installment Rs 6.33 crore the project is yet to take off till date.
