JOWAI: A newly-constructed hanging footbridge over Umngot river in Amlarem sub-division of Jaintia Hills district collapsed on Wednesday.

The footbridge located at Shnongpdeng village, connects villages like Amkoi, Darrang, in Jaintia Hills district with villages like Wahkdait and others in East Khasi Hills district.

“The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be ascertained”, official source said.

Sanctioned way back in 2009 at a cost of more than Rs 45 lakh, the construction works of the footbridge was completed two months back and was yet to be formally inaugurated.
