SHILLONG: Several NGOs will jointly hold a public rally protesting ‘unregulated enrollment of migrants in the State’s electoral roll’ at Motphran on Monday.

The NGOs — KSU, FKJGP, SSSS and HNYF-are expected to declare their future course of action in the meeting to compel the government to put in place necessary measures to ensure that migrants and foreigners do not get enrolled in the voters’ list.

“We would be holding this rally to inform the people how the Government is enrolling the migrant and doubtful voters in the State’s poll rolls,” FKJGP working President Jo Marwein said here on Thursday.

Marwein alleged that some legislators had issued citizenship certificates to those prospective voters who have doubtful antecedents.

“We have learnt that while election officials have detected several dubious people who come to enroll themselves in the electoral rolls, there is a lot of pressure from a section of the politicians on the officials to register such people,” the FKJGP working president said, adding, “The highest concentration of doubtful voters is in Shillong North, Shillong East, Shillong West and Shillong South constituencies”.

Several areas in Jaintia Hills district, especially in the coal belt area, and parts of West Khasi Hills are also experiencing a similar threat, Marwein said.

Last week, these organisations had submitted a letter to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma expressing vehement opposition to the enrolment of members belonging to the floating population of the state.
