Shillong: While the Task Force on the ‘Save Umkhrah/Umshyrpi Campaign’ believes in cleaning the mindset of the people to save the two polluted streams, the Meghalaya NCP Youth Wing has adopted a different approach by cleaning a portion of the Umkhrah river at Polo Ground here on Saturday.

The approach adopted by Meghalaya NCP Youth Wing contradicts the ideology of the Task Force who are against the theory of manually cleaning the streams.

It was a picture in contrast at Polo on Saturday. The Task Force was organizing a programme to garner public support for the Save Umkhrah and Umshyrpi Campaign at the Polo Parking Lot, while on the other hand members of the NCP youth wing carried out a cleaning drive at the Umkhrah.

“This is a humble beginning we have made towards protection of the river. We would continue with this effort at least twice every month,” NCP Youth Wing working president Clifford M Nengnong said while speaking to reporters here on Saturday.

He also said that they would be more than happy if the different localities decide to get themselves engaged in cleaning the stream.

Nengnong said that pamphlets would be distributed to those people residing along the banks of the river in which appeals would be made to people not to throw wastes into the streams.

He also appealed to residents of the city to inculcate civic sense and not throwing garbage into the streams, including releasing of effluents which directly pollute the streams.

He also stated that people should make use of the Municipal vehicles which are used to collect wastes from different localities, instead of throwing garbage indiscriminately wherever they like.
