SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills District Administration on Sunday imposed Section 144 CrPC in the localities of Nongrimmaw, Lumsohra and Nongrimbah in Laitumkhrah after tension gripped the area on late Saturday night.

The situation in the area turned volatile on Saturday night after an elderly man was hit on the head by a group of youths who were engaged in a scuffle near the Harijan Colony in Laitumkhrah.

Local legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh on Sunday informed that a group of youth who were engaged in a scuffle hit the elderly man when he attempted to mediate to end their scuffle.

“It was a minor injury and did not even require stitches,” Ampareen informed, adding that soon after the incident, a mob gathered at the spot but timely intervention by the police and the district administration doused the situation.

However, after a few hours, the situation again turned volatile when a lady, who was in a group, pelted stones on one of the houses.

The District Administration immediately intervened and convened a meeting with some community members of the locality.

A peace committee was also formed to ensure that tension does not escalate again in the area.

“We are taking all action and security has also been beefed up in and around the area,” police said.

“There is no need for panic. We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that peace and order is maintained in the area,” Ampareen added.

The legislator also asserted that action would be taken against any one for perpetrating any acts of violence. “The Dorbar Dong have also been asked to remain on vigil to ensure that that situation does not turn worse again.

Meanwhile, the elderly person has filed an FIR against two youths and the police have asked the residents of the locality to produce the duo before the police.
