SHILLONG: While the creation of a separate High Court is still a distant dream, the number of pending cases in the Shillong Bench of the Gauhati High Court has crossed 800.

As per the statistics till March 31st, there are altogether 868 pending cases alone in the Shillong Bench.

Sources from the court say that there are only two judges to adjudicate these cases, which has affected the justice delivery mechanism.

According to sources, there were altogether 902 cases out which 139 cases were disposed of last month.

“Disposal rate is more than the institution in this bench,” source added.

It may be mentioned that the Union Cabinet recently approved the proposal to amend the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971, paving way for the establishment of separate high courts in Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura.
