AGARTALA: A nine-member team of IL&FS would arrive here to undertake technical survey for constructing a bridge connecting Sabroom (South Tripura) with Ramgarh of Bangladesh, official source confirmed here on Thursday.

The survey, which is scheduled to commence on May 10 will be done in presence of representatives from Bangladesh side, said an official of Industries and Commerce department. The technical survey includes status of tide in the river Feni, soil formation and height of the proposed bride from the river.

Once the technical survey is over, the state government will undertake the construction work, he said. The bridge connecting Sabarom with Ramgarh of Bangladesh is strategic keeping in mind of the close proximity between Chittgong Sea port and Ramgarh.

As per the preliminary survey, the distant between Sabroom and Chittgong Sea port is around 75 km only. “If the bridge is constructed, the not only Tripura, the entire Northeast region could access the Chittagong Sea port through Sabroomm, southern most border of Tripura”, the official pointed out.

Earlier, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar during his visit to Dhaka in January 2010, had requested Banglaesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that business community of Northeast wants to use the Chittagong Sea port for better bilateral trade.

In reply, Bangladesh Prime Minister had said, “We have no objection offering access to Chittagong port but for that one bridge is needed through Ramgarh. However, the Bangladesh government will not bear the expenditure for constructing bridge”.

After receiving positive gesture, the Chief Minister had written a letter to the Centre informing the Bangladesh government’s stand on the use of Chittagong port as well allowing Indian government to construct a bridge connecting two sides- Sabaroom and Ramgarh. Then, the ball started rolling in favour of long cherished dream of having a bridge between Sabroom and Ramgarh. Accordingly, a joint survey was conducted for execution the plan and now the technical survey will be done to overcome yet another hurdle for the dream project.
