NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawshynrut Circle, and the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) have jointly called for a 500-hour road blockade from Riangdo in West Khasi Hills to Athiabari in Goalpara, Assam from Wednesday morning to protest against the government’s failure to repair the Riangdo-Athiabari road despite a deadline issued by them earlier.

The decision was taken during a meeting attended by the KSU, GSU representatives and headmen of Ri Nongtrai (consisting of 37 local headmen) at Mawshynrut on Friday.

During the blockade trucks carrying coal, silemanite, timber and other minerals would not be allowed to ply along the route.

However, trucks carrying food items and construction materials for the locals, would be exempted from the purview of the blockade, it was informed.

The organisations alleged that the government collects huge revenue from trucks that ply along this route and yet nothing has been done so far to repair the road despite repeated requests.
