Tura: The first day of the six-day-long GNLA bandh in Garo Hills passed off peacefully with no report of any untoward incident on Monday.

The bandh, which bean at 6am, was total in the three districts of East, West and South Garo Hills. Schools remained closed and vehicles remained off the roads.

The only government offices which opened for work were that of the DC and SP office and SDO civil but they also functioned with just a handful of staff as many employees residing in distant areas of the town stayed home fearing attacks by militants who allegedly are keeping an eye on the towns. The Meghalaya Inspector General of Police (IGP) overseeing security in Garo Hills, G H P Raju said the police and security forces continue to remain on high alert to thwart any attempt by militants to create a fear psychosis.
